fired from gaza into israel just in the past week. like a patient and long suffering adult who puts up with only so much of a rebellious child before finally saying that's enough, israel this week decided it would no longer be savagely attacked. israel didn't draw first blood but it has vowed it will fight until the last blood. israel not only has the right to defend is self, it has the right to eliminate the cancer threatening its very existence. hamas may rule the day it has crossed the bridge too far fit is business as usual by the american media, you might see sad pictures from gaza of wounded civilians. what you won't see is that long before the palestinians who celebrated hamas had suffered wounds, they inflicted them on israel. pray for the peace of jerusalem. also pray for the steady resolve prime minister

[ applause ] >> we are watching closely what is developing in israel now. hamas has fired hundreds of rockets from gaza on totsy denies of israel, after an israeli airstrike thursday took out a top hamas military commander. hamas warned israel's airstrikes had opened the gates of hell. joining me from israeli's border with gaza former chief of staff to benjamin netanyahu, navtal erxleben net, thank you for joining me. let's talk about how this started. i'm afraid the international media may try to describe this as israeli aggression this is a response to what has been a rerentless assault by the hamas, toward israel.

>> yeah, i think your typical american doesn't know what is happening on ground. seven years ago israel vacated the gaza strip and handed the land over to the palestinians. the palestinians formed an independent government, they have a state, a palestinian state in gaza, a free state, they run it. 2005, they began shooting missiles on civilians in israel. ever since they just went on and on shooting missiles. now i'm standing in the southern part of israel, one million civilians in this area are now in shelters, enduring shot at us, without provocation. a few days ago, enough was enough. prime minister netanyahu authorized the killing of the commander of the hamas forces, hamas terrorist arm in the region we took him out since then we've been in this

conflict where they shoot missiles on our civilians and we retaliate against their military. we do not shoot on civilians the ones shooting at our civilians. we only hunt down the terrorists themselves. >> mike: nav tally there has been widespread reports that in gaza sometimes the rocket launchers are placed in schools or mosques, in order to essentially make them very difficult for israel to hit. can you confirm that is one of the strategies that hamas has employed so they essentially are using children as human shields? >> that's correct. by the way, this is the islamic tactic. i've seen with it my own eyes, major in commando unit in many houses the, you have a living room, kitchen, and a missile room, with removeable ceiling. you have a missile launcher

standing, move the ceiling, shoot the missile on israelis and could have up. in essence, they are using -- and cover-up. in essence they are using children as human shields. we are being as cautious as we can. when they shoot at my own children we will retaliate, persevere, even if they use human shields. >> naftali it sons the only way to clean gaza out from the terrorism is you have to go in, in a land action. you can't do that all from the air. how close to do you think we are from a ground invasion by the israeli defense forces? >> governor, i think you are right, there's no choice but to enter and clean it up. i don't know what the chances are over the next 24, 48 hours. but i think that at some point we will need to go in. i want to point it -- point out, it is not only a battle

between average me and terrorists this is a battle of spirit. we are at the forefront of a big wave of radical islam out to eliminate the whole free world. it just happens to be this is the frontline. it is a battle of spirits. they think if they shoot another missile and another one, they will wear us out. i'm here to tell hamas, we've been in land for over 3,800 years, we are not going anywhere. we are here to stay you might come and g we are going to fight as much as we need. guy four kids, i'll willing to put on fatigue and go and fight, just as every israeli the one million israelis in the shelters are very strong and willing to endure it as long as necessary, because this is our land and we are not going anywhere. >> mike: it sounds like there's an extraordinary resolve on the part of the israeli people and i sensed

that from tel aviv down. in a final word, does this look like it could be resolved by diplomacy? is that still possible? >> you know, with terrorists, you don't talk. terrorists, you kill. i don't recall that on september 12th, anyone in the united states intended to engage in diplomacy, with al-qaeda and bin laden. this is precisely the situation. there's a terrorist group not far from here that's out to kill my own children. we are not going to talk, we are going to fight as much as necessary. and we're going to win. >> mike: be safe my friend, take care and our throughouts and -- and our thoughts and prayers are with you. >> thank you very much. great to have your backing. [ applause ] >> mike: friday former cia director general david petraeus met with the senate and house intelligence committees in closed door hearings. according to new york congressman peter king, petraeus testified, under oath that he knew right way that the benghazi attacks that killed four americans were terrorism. according to king, petraeus also said, that his original talking points about islamic extremists were taken out of the administration's narrative on attacks. the question is, who made those changes and why? joining me is south carolina congressman trey gowdy. nice to have you back on the show. [ applause ] >> good to see you governor. >> mike: is there any way possible that the white house did not know that this was terrorism? now that you have her the

testimony of general petraeus. >> of course not. they knew before anyone else knew that it was terrorism. why would the department of state, the cia, department of defense lie to the chief executive, to the commander in chief? they knew what it was governor but it didn't fit the narrative. the narrative was al-qaeda is on its heels. when the narrative becomes al-qaeda is at the front door and they are about kill four of our fellow americans that doesn't bode well from an electoral standpoint. they knew and scrubbed out that information, susan rice either didn't have it or use it when she went on the talk shows sunday. >> mike: one of the questions is, who is the they? are we closer to knowing that? did this go to the white house? was this done within the internal operations of the cia, at the state department? did you -- can you give us

insight as to who it was who authorized and put their hands to the document and said we've got to scratch this out? >> no, sir we can't that. is a subtragedy to a larger tragedy that government can scrub out salient relevant information and we are no closer to knowing who did it and why. i suspect we know why. we are no closer to knowing who. i would say we've had two hearings now, one closed and one open. we have only just begun. i understand the need to have closed door hearings for classified information. but this is the same administration that wants to try terrorists in open court, with full discovery in front of the media in new york city. we are going to have open hearings as soon as we get back as soon as the new congress is convened. we are going to have open hearings that we can ask people under oath with penalty of perjury the question you just asked me. mike mike --

>> mike: there was a strong moment in the president's conference the other day when he was asked about susan risk the person that went out on point on that sunday following attacks. why the ambassador on the united nations would be the person, not the director of national intelligence, not the cia director, not the national security director, not the secretary of state, even the vice president, but the u.n. ambassador. when questioned and challenged about her testimony, this is what the president said then i'm going to get your reaction. >> the president: if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. for them to go after the u.n. ambassador who had nothing to do with benghazi, and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence she received. and to besmirch her reputation, it is outrageous. >> mike: to quote shakespeare

we thinks the man dotm protest too much. tell me why he would be so reactive to the legitimate question and then go after senators graham and mccain. >> he was a little sanctimonious, a little paternalistic and left out a senator by the name of kelley ayotte who appears to be a female instructive that he left her out of his critique of graham and mccain. here's the reality neither graham or mccain told susan rice to go on national television and mislead the american people we didn't pick her, scrub the talking points, he did. if he is disappointed with the way he's being treated here's my suggestion, you come when she is subpoenaed so we can ask you why you did it. she is a career diplomat, i don't think she needs barack obama to take up for her in a press conference she has been doing this for a long

time. she either going to the answer questions if he thinks that is unfair, he can come answer 'em. >> mike: congressman when you were on a few weeks ago, you indicated that you felt like general petraeus needed to come and testify and you would be willing to compel him to do so. right now, he has done that. he did it voluntarily, he didn't have to but he did it under oath. what about hillary clinton, the secretary of state. will she be subpoenaed if she does not voluntarily come to the committees and go through a fulltime of testimony? >> the short answer is yes. but i believe she has already volunteered to come. here's the issue general petraeus has come once. he hasn't come before the oversight committee, he hasn't come before judiciary and other committees of jurisdiction. the notion that you can come once in a closed door hearing with no cameras and public not know what is going on and the rest of us not be able to ask

questions, that is not going to cut it. i appreciate that he came particularly during a difficult week. once is not enough in a four person murder investigation. he may find himself back. i would support him coming before oversight. hillary clinton is going to come, susan rice is going to come this is a murder investigation governor, this is not desperate doctors wives having sex with army generals although that has most people interested in it. it is a murder investigation. four of our fellow citizens were murdered under horrific circumstances. if it inconvenient for the secretary of state to come, too bad. she is going to comic until i can and all of your questions and the people i work forces questions. >> mike: we appreciate your tenacity and being here today to give us unsight. congressman trey gowdy, south carolina. >> president with the support of democrats is standing firm on raising taxes on americans making more than $2 --

[ applause ] >> mike: since our interview with congressman gowdy in the last segment. white house security adviser responded to the khraeupbls that general petraeus talking points in benghazi were edited, he said the only edit was to chain the word consulate to the word diplomatic facility since the facility in benghazi was not formally a consulate.

the only edit made by the white house was the how to refer to the facility. friday, president obama met with congressional leaders to begin talks in hopes of making a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff the end of the year when a combination of 1.6 billion dollars in tax increases as well as schedule spending cuts would send our economy over the edge into a recession. can they strike a deal before it is too late? joining me house budget committee member, reid ribble. talks started friday, what needs to happen if we are going to be able to avoid this fiscal cliff? >> a couple of things have to happen. our founders set up a system of government that required us to find consensus. they said if you find consensus on something do those things, if you don't, don't do those things. this requires some form of

consensus. there's talk about revenue it has to be on the table. the american people need to know revenue is the smaller element of it. if our revenues today are about the same as what they were in 2006, and yet spending is over a trillion a year more. so it is clearly a spending driven problem if we just talk on the revenue side we'll miss an opportunity to solve the problem. >> mike: the president is focused on making sure there's a tax increase. how much difference will it make? will republicans, at some point say okay? >> if that's what it takes to protect people, we would rather have a tax increase than a disaster. >> mike: i think that republicans -- >> i think republicans are at the place where they recognize revenue should be a component. the argument or disagreement comes on how you go about that. tax rates do not really correlate well to the amount of revenue the federal treasury receives. tax deductions do.

i think the house plan is going to look similar, republicans are going to look similar to what governor romney talked b let's cap expenditures or deductions to increase revenue and focus on spending. >> mike: his plan called for a 50,000 cap you can take reductions whether it was charity, business deduction, but you had up to $50,000 above that you weren't going to get the deduction is that the way it works? >> exactly. if we stay focused on the revenue side it makes it look as if there's appearance of win for with the white house. we don't need a win for the white house. we don't need a win for the congress. we need a win for the american people. i ran for congress because i was concerned about the debt and deficit in this country. there's talk about this fiscal cliff, we might have already been over the cliff now we are trying to determine what type of landing we are going to have when we land. is it going to be soft or

hard? it can be softer if we do the right things that cause economic growth that put americans back to work and gets control over spending. >> mike: the president has been saying i want to find ways to compromise. is there anything specific on the table that the president has laid out and said this is what i'm willing to do to meet you? >> not that we've been told. he's talked about raising tax rates on the top 2% of americans. >> mike: that's not a compromise. >> no, it is not. you know how this works. the fact of the matter is, both places have to be in the discussion. i think all of it should be in the discussion. i don't think that conservatives should necessarily complain that all things are in the discussion. we should be talking about everything. there ought to be transparent and we ought to come back to the american people with a plan that sets this country's finances on the right path so children and grandchildren

have a future waiting for them. >> mike: will we avert and avoid the fiscal cliff before the end of the year are we going to go over it and pick up the carnage? >> i think there's going to be some agreement that will get us into next year where we can address the real issues that have to happen. probably the biggest friction point is our tax code. i think we need to have a rewrite of the tax code. major reform of that. i think they will find some agreement before the end of the year. next year house house ways and means with the u.s. senate will reform the tax code and get a pro economic growth policy for it so we can put americans back to work. >> mike: i hope it happens. fight hard. it congressman thank you very much for being here today. >> governor thank you for having me. which kicks off notable quote ables of the week. >> the president: we should not whole the middle class hostage while we debate tax cuts for the wealthy. we cannot afford to extend bush tax cuts for the wealthy. i'm concerned about not finding our specifics in a situation where the wealthy, modest tax increase on the wealthy is not going to break their backs they will still be wealth any. >> mike: wealthy, wealthy, wealthy, wealthy. you get the idea the president is obsessed with beating up on people that he has decided are wealthy? you wonder what is the point of all that? can i just tell you something? i didn't grow up wealthy, grew up poor. i didn't resent the wealthy. i was never thought by my parents to be resentful, jealous or envious of people who had more than we did. i was thought in america if you work hard and find the right thing to do, you might end up like them.

i was not so much that we hated 'em and thought they shouldn't have what they did. it was an incentive so the rest of us could hopefully, one day be able to have the things that we were able to see think the president is making a big mistake by dividing the country and making some people resent what they have and what others have. >> the facts show every american is going to be impacted with the fiscal cliff. afl/cio president richard trumka, is not worried at all. here's what he says. he says, the most frustrating thing about washington, d.c. is the way political insiders create a self-reinforcing reality out of nonsense. take what the media are calling the fiscal cliff there is no fiscal cliff. what we're facing is an obstacle course with a manufactured crisis thrown together in response to inflated rhetoric about our federal deficit. this is amazing that a union

boss would tell us there's no fiscal cliff. we don't have a debt problem. we only owe about 16 trillion dollars that's what our debt is, surely we can pay that off, we'll just ask every american to write a big fat check for about $60,000 a piece. would you write yours and send it. if you are dumb enough to do it, send it to me, don't send it to the government. i'd be delighted to have it. mr. trumka ought to be talking to some of the people in the union that would not budge with the hostess baking company. we're losing hostess, they're gone. snowballs, hostess cakes, ding-dongs, twinkies, they will be no more. tried to find a twinkie this week, you can't. this is worth more than gold. now people know they are not gonna get 'em. because the hostess company said look you have to have

concessions we can't be competitive. the union said no, we'll go ahead and see if you are really willing to put yourself out of business. well, they did. over 18,500 people who used to have jobs, don't have 'em any more. trumka can say what he wants we lost twinkies and people lost jobs, because of just that kind of thinking that says, there's no fiscal cliff. >> the week after losing the presidential election mitt romney held a conference call with many soft campaign workers. he remarked on how obama used the old playbook to target specific interest groups african-americans and hispanic and young voters. you can imagine somebody making 25, 30, $35,000 a year being told you are going to get free health care, particularly if you don't have it, worth $10,000 per family in perpetuity. this is huge. likewise with his manic voters

free health care was a big plus in addition with regards to hispanic voters amnesty for illegals, so-called dream act was a huge plus for that voting group. i campaigned for governor romney and was for him and disappointed when he didn't win. i'm going to take issue with the perception that people who are poor want to be. and people getting government benefits want to stay there. in my experience as a person who didn't start out on the high end of the economic spectrum on the other end as a pastor for 12 years then as a governor who worked 10 1/2 years and saw more than half the people get off of welfare rolls on to a payroll, people in this country, deep down want to work. they want dignity, responsibility. the idea that people are just delighted to be on a government handout, indicates you must not know too many of the people that i have known. sometimes people give up and they don't think there's any

way out of hole. they may resign themselves the only way to survive is through government subsidies and handouts, not because they want to be there. republicans need to be able to talk to the fact of people's real dreams and hopes, which is not to be on government dependent programs but rather to be independent on their own feet living in the homes they choose, pick the food they want. earlier this week, . >> announced she is not gonna step down from her post as house minority leader. i say, oh good, because we would really miss her wisdom when she makes statements like this: >> sorry? >> [ inaudible ] >> i'm sorry? >> [ inaudible ] >> oh, i see what mean, i'm sorry, i would hope not. i would hope -- i'm with the 11th amendment is it the 11th amendment that -- 14th it is,

notch? >> you never do wrongdoing what is right. we teach our kids even if you are a minority voice. even if no one else an glass with you, you do what is right and that will win out. there are times we feel like a voice in the wilderness, that's okay. i think sometimes we could present our message in a more winsome fashion. we could reach out to people, sometimes they get a little concerned we become shrill, angry, we become -- we take on a tone that, you know that's hypocritical. i think our convictions to the value of life and sanctity of marriage these are values weather rich, i don't think we should step away from those. >> mike: you said with two very different parties, there's a lot in common that people have. >> we do. >> mike: what do we have in common? not you and me we have a lot in common, i want to believe

so when we talk about the great divisions in this country you have said with optimism, there's a lot in common. >> it is a great country. we have a lot in common. we have the same creator. we have the same love of god overseeing us. not everybody accepts it equally. but we have the sovereign protection of god, i think who watches over us. i believe that all of us, even with different opinions of social issues, at our core we want what's best for our children and our grandchildren. i think what unites us is far greater than anything that divides us. elections take their toll on our country don't they? >> yes, they do. >> i think that's the reason this message on grace is so important to me. i think greatest news in all of human history is god's

grace. i mean his love for his people and his commitment to redeem a people. this is big news. i think that message is the message that can unite us and heal hearts and change lives. >> max, i've never picked up one of your books that wasn't a master piece this is no exception. i'm delighted to have you here and i wish you the best. >> thank you for having me on. >> thank you. max lucado.
